Should I tan in the sun?

This summer I decided to wear SPF 50 when I go in the sun, and thansk to that I'm really pale. I feel like I'm taking care of my skin but people keep saying I look like a ghost and that I need to get out of the house or lay outside. I was wondering how bad it is to get a slight tan from being in the pool in the sun? I don't want skin cancer but I also don't want to be made fun f for being pale.
